We got very enthusiastic about being in a German city, since some ancestors of my family left there and went to Brazil many years ago (it’s a pity that we haven’t got German citizenship, lol).

Munich was very crowded by tourists due to the very sunny holiday. Squares and restaurants were always full of visitors who wanted to taste their typical food, a lot of beers and finger food. That city also has a lot of museums, which portray the First and Second World War, once that’s where the base of operations of that time was located.

Ulm and Schelklingen

Before going to Munich, we dropped by some friends’ houses, and we visited those charming cities too. Ulm is the city where Albert Einstein was born. We visited the Danube river and its edges, great areas for tours and exercises. At the center, there’s a Lutheran cathedral which has such a beautiful architecture, and it’s the highest of the world.

In front of the church, there’s a fair made by the residents every Tuesday, and they sell their colonial products, such as bread, kuchens, cheese, fruits, vegetables and flowers. We also tried a traditional German sausage with bread. Surrounding Schelklingen, there are amazing fields and brooks. It’s a super peaceful city.

Marienplatz

It’s the central square of the city, where you can find the statue of Mary, the protector of Bavaria during the occupation of Swedish people. We also visited a lot of touristic attractions quite near there, such as the clock tower of the city hall, where we saw a lot of tourists assembling at 11a.m. and 5p.m. to see the mechanical dancers of the tower and its bells ring.

Quite near there, we visited Hofbräuhaus, a famous brewery and restaurant built in 1589, an excellent place to listen to the very traditional German music, eat and drink lots of beer.

Hofgarten and English Garten

Hofgarten is a royal garden in front of the royal residence (nowadays, it’s a museum), a very nice place where we saw a lot of instrumentalists play inside the temple at the center of the garden.

We also walked until the English Garten, another park full of huge green lawn and brooks, where a lot of people were enjoying the holiday to relax, have a picnic and we even saw some people riding a horse, as the park is giant, and the best part is that you can visit it for free.

Biergarthen and Viktualienmarket

That place is amazing, and as it was a holiday then, there seemed to be an outdoor party, we were very glad to be there, where there were lots of shared tables, and the people who didn’t want to buy food there brought it from home, they bought only an iced draft beer to follow and everything was alright. It was a place full of talks, chats and laughs.

And we went in search of the famous and delicious schweineaxe, also noun as pork knuckles, a name that doesn’t seem so attractive, but I guess I’d better explain the dish: it comes with a great part of pig thigh, much well roasted and also pururuca (crackling), and if you want side dishes such as sauerkrauts with potatoes, bread with yellow mustard and, of course, that mug of very iced draft beer, and we spent only 13 Euros (55 Reais). It served the both of us very well!

Where to stay

Means of Transportation

We arrived via flixbus bus from Innsbruck Austria, worth 8 Euros (35 reais) each ticket, bus station next to the train station. Already inside the city we went by subway to our Airbnb.

The means of transport are great and very comfortable, very easy to use, there are totems where tickets can be bought 1.60 Euros (7 Reais).

Safety of the City

By the time we stayed we found it very safe, and we saw a bit of policing through the streets and sights. We walked a lot around the city during the day and it was very quiet, the people are super friendly and helpful. We also avoid walking alone after 10 pm. We love to walk around here.

Munich’s local currency is the Euro, and the dollar exchange rate for June / 2019 is $ 1.00 to 0.90 Euro. We recommend changing currency in a safe place such as an airport or an Exchange, city bank. It’s good to always have local currency.

Expenses Total

Our expenses in currency (REAIS) in Munich during 5 days for the couple were the following:

Feeding: R$265,00 (market, snacks)

The city has a great air of party, mainly on holidays and weekends. For feeding and for fun, there is a bunch of options. Everything is quite close, and that’s great to go for a walk around downtown. Communication wasn’t an issue either, as lots of people speak English.
